Our Program

The graduate training program Viruses of the Immune System was initiated in 2004 by Bernhard Fleckenstein, Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen- Nuremberg, and Ron Desrosiers, Harvard Medical School, with the objective to foster both scientific exchange and graduate training.

Research and training activities in Erlangen are funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Funding started January 2005 and will end December 2013. The exchange program at Harvard Medical School is covered by grants of the participating groups and supported by fellowships from GlaxoSmithKline Germany.

Our Mission

The concept of our program is to provide intense training and mentoring for excellent PhD and MD students doing research at the interface of immunology and virology. Their projects are embedded in a network of established interdisciplinary collaborations at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg.

Research topics include the basis of AIDS pathogenesis and viral oncogenesis as well as therapy and prophylaxis of herpesvirus and retrovirus infections. The local research and training activities are complemented by an exchange program with Harvard Medical School, which is based on many years of successful cooperations.
